Hand knotted rugs are unique items and therefore cannot be replaced “like for like”. Thus loss adjusters can waste a lot of their precious time and fixed fee trying to find equivalent rugs and risk a dissatisfied and frustrated customer in the end.
We know some rugs are family heir looms, making them difficult to replace. We can in many cases, solve all of them including (but not restricted to):
1. Black Water – Just because a rug has been contaminated with black water, it most definitely is not necessarily damaged beyond economic repair.
How do you restore rugs damaged by black water?
Rugs affected by a Black Water flood can be collected and brought back to our Rug Spa for a swift triage to determine if it is economic to attempt restoration. If we judge that it is economic, we will rinse off any debris and then soak the rug/s in a bath of antimicrobial to kill off any bacteria still present in the rug and dry them. We will then make a full assessment and send a quotation to fully restore the rug, having ascertained it’s value and if the quote is agreeable, only then will the rug will be restored.
2. Misshapen Rugs – When subjected to flooding of any description, rugs can become misshapen due to shrinkage.
How do you restore misshapen rugs?
These problems can be corrected by a process known as blocking. After cleaning, the rug is placed upside down on a blocking table and gradually stretched back into shape with the aid of a carpet power stretcher and large staples to tack it into shape. The rug is then dried upside down and the tacks are removed. Great care has to be taken during this process as rugs can easily be torn if carried out by an untrained individual (it is recommended not to try this at home!).
Our technicians are trained to the highest level to ensure they understand the principles of successful Rug restoration.
3. Bleeding of Dyes – Certain rugs have unstable dyes which when subject to water damage, can migrate into lighter color dyed areas of the rugs.
How do you restore rugs that have had their colors run?
Certain rugs have unstable dyes which when subject to water damage, can migrate into lighter color dyed areas of the rugs e.g. red dyes migrating into the whiter field section of the rug. This can often be corrected or at least restored to an acceptable level but is slow and skillful work. It is worth the time and associated costs when restoring an expensive Persian rug or other high net worth rugs.
4. Fire or Toxic Odours – Often in plastic or protein fires scenarios, rugs can absorb the toxic acrid odour, usually making it impossible for competitor restoration companies to resolve.
How do you restore rugs that have absorbed fire or toxic odours?
Often in plastic or protein fires scenarios, rugs can absorb the toxic acrid odour, usually making it impossible for competitor restoration companies to resolve. We have been able to resolve this issue with specially designed products and the correct cleaning procedures. Many hundreds of smoke damaged rugs have been restored to their former glory through the Rug Spa.
5. Heavily Soiled – One of the biggest challenges to cleaning companies that undertake Rug cleaning is removing all the loose grit and fine soil particulate from the rug.
Other cleaning companies may be able to remove general soiling and some stains from the carpet fibers but are always left with the loose grit problem. Rugs can then be fully immersive cleaned to complete the restoration effectively.
